How did YouTube turn from a home video platform to a powerful marketing tool?
April 23rd, 2005. That is the day the first video was shared on YouTube. It is called “Me at the Zoo” and it was shared by YouTube co-founder, Jawed Karim. It’s a 18 second video and it is still there, with more than 22 MILLION views.
One year after YouTube was launched, 65000 videos were being uploaded every day. Today, on it’s 10th birthday, more than 300 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube EVERY MINUTE… YouTube has revolutionized our culture, making it possible to everyone to publish videos for the world to watch, virtually democratizing video by removing the middleman. In the beginning, YouTube founders saw it just as a digital storage place where users could share their videos, not as the marketing powerhouse that it is today. How did it happen, then?
Google founders where always good in anticipating trends, and they identified YouTube’s potential very early. A little more than one year after it was launched, YouTube was bought by Google for $1.65 BILLION. This changed the picture completely. While the approach of the original YouTube founders to copyright was very loose, basically an “everything goes” vision, Google changed it completely, starting to protect copyright in a very effective way. This was the first step into turning YouTube into a business platform.
